Reader for Parent Inclusion

Parent inclusion is considered as a key component for schools in general and especially for multicultural schools, as it seems the only efficient way to bridge the differences between different cultural practices and norms related to education. Parental inclusion is one of the main aims of this project and to explore ways to do this the reader collects Case studies of parent inclusion/working practices and offers a Toolkit for thematic discussions to introduce sensitive subjects such as gender, body, and health for teachers and parents in friendly collaborative ways.

The Case studies section presents 5 practices from different countries illustrating strategies to create engagement and interaction between parents of different cultural backgrounds. Partners identified these practices as a source of inspiration to develop their own methods, and we think they can provide inspiration for other teachers and schools. We have tested these activities with parents and teachers in the five countries.

The toolkit for thematic discussions presents 8 activities that the partners have developed in the project and that address the themes of diversity, health, gender and parenting in interactive ways with the parents.

The techniques proposed in the Toolkit will rely on an intercultural approach and non-directive, non-formal methods. They try to acknowledge the value of the particular cultural background and life experiences of the parents, focusing on the dialogue and joint negotiation as opposed to the mere observation of differences.
